Here
is what I thought of Of Montreal's new album, “Lousy With
Sylvianbriar.” Please keep in mind that all scores are out of a
possible 10.
“Fugitive
Air” -
Charming. This is a charming song. Plus, any song that uses the word
pigeons is OK by me. A bit long in the tooth, but overall a very
charming track. Score:
6
“Obsidian
Currents” - There
is so much I like about this track. The delicate vocals, the low key
vibe of the music, but the lyrics are pretty interesting – and I am
a sucker for good lyrics. Score:
7
“Belle
Glade Missionaries” - I
dig the '60s vibe on this track, but that is about it. Scatter-shot
and bloated, this track didn't really seem to go
anywhere. Score: 3
“Sirens
Of Your Toxic Spirit” -
Honest and heartfelt this track cut through my (faux) tough exterior
and got on the inside. Any song that can make this old hooker's heart
feel anything is doing their job well. Score:
8
“Colossus”
- Once
again, this track doesn't really go anywhere or do anything for me.
Filler. Score: 2
“Triumph
of Disintegration” - You
know a song is going to be good when the first lyric is “The last
ten days have been a motherfucker.” That being said, I liked the ¼
and ¾ parts of this song. The other two parts can just go away.
Score: 6
“Amphibian
Days” - This
song just floats down a lazy river of dreamy guitars and airy vocals.
Very nice. Very soothing. Score:
7
“She
Ain't Speaking Now” - Schizophrenic.
This track is all over the place and just left me kind of cold. Meh.
Score: 3
“Hegira
Émigré
”
- I
can;t really put my finger on why I like this song, I just do. I like
the jangly guitars, the rambling vocals – all of it. Score:
8
“Raindrop
In My Skull” - This
track thew me for a loop. I wasn't expecting such a fresh sounding
introspective track but here it is. Rebecca Cash's vocals reeled me
in and the hippy trippy melodies made me mellow out. Score:
7
“Imbecile
Rages” - I
got a Beatles' vibe from this track. While it really didn't go
anywhere (again) it did engage me and make me want to listen. Score:
6
Average
Track Score: 5.7 Despite
not a single “hit” on this album I will use it for stress relief.
Would I recommend it to buy? For Of Montreal fans and my hipster
friends? YES.
For
the rest of the world? Doubtful.
