Moby - Innocents
Here is what I thought of Moby's new album, "Innocents" track by track. Remember each score is out of a possible 10.
"Everything That Rises" - Love it. Love everything about it. This instrument track has tension, character, and depth. Everything I expect from Moby. Beautiful. Score: 9
"A Case for Shame" - A stellar track. Moody, dark, and fantastic vocals to boot. Seriously, Cold Specks' vocals are so inviting, so textured, they just punched me in the gut. Fantastic. Score: 9
"Almost Home" - Meh. This ethereal track is decent music wise, but it is a bit too laid back for my taste. Damien Jurado's light and air vocals were just boring to me. This to me is kind of filler. Score: 4
"Going Wrong" - A very depressing instrumental track. But a good type of depressing. Don't ask my why, but I got a feel of that song that plays in all the Charlie Brown specials, but if it was watered down and was given some heroin. But all in a good way. I can appreciate depression. Score: 7
"The Perfect Life" - This somewhat upbeat track took me by surprise. It is uplifting and thoroughly enjoyable. Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne showcases his interesting vocals which impressed me in spades. You should like this one. Score: 8
"The Last Day"- The track started off a bit odd - for me - but then Skylar Grey's super sexy vocals came in and made me feel all sexual. Seriously, I started to slink around thinking sexy thoughts. That's the sign of a good track. If it can make this tired old hooker feel sexy then it has done its job. I DARE you to listen to this track and NOT want to fuck. I double dog dare you. Score: 9
"Don't Love Me" - It's sexy. Its jazzy. But it leaves me wanting more. Not a bad track, the vocals are hip and jazzy, but the tracks plateaus and never really climaxes. Score: 5
"A Long Time" - This track is a long boring --- track. Really goes nowhere and not really that remarkable. Score: 2
"Saints" - This! Instrumental but this track rocks and has balls. Nice background music when you are trying to get crap done. Score: 8
"Tell Me" - A dark and brooding track. There are points of it that don't appeal to me, but it has a certain something. Score: 6
"The Lonely Night" - Depressing. This track is just depressing and not in a good way. Mark Lanegan's vocals made me want to go out to the field and shoot myself. If that was his goal then bravo! But the track was just depressing. Score: 1
"The Dogs" - Moby takes a trip to the overindulgent side with this 9 1/2 minute opus. That said, the first half vocals were interesting and had a texture which was enjoyable, but the length of the track seemed over bloated and unnecessary. Score: 5
Average track score: 6.1. I am shocked by the low score, but when you have a few clunkers on the album, it will bring the average down. Would I recommend this as a buy? YES.
Its not for blowing out your speakers of your car, but this would make excellent background music for everyday life.
Much love,
Jim
