Here is what I
thought about “The Best Man Holiday: Original Motion Picture
Soundtrack.” Remember – all scores are out of a possible 10
points.
“Christmas Time
To Me” - Jordin Sparks sings
the hell out of this middle of the road Christmas song. The lyrics
were better than just OK, but her voice – that voice
– gives me life. Score: 8
“Someday At
Christmas” - Not that crazy
about the song itself, and really not crazy about Mario's vocals AT
ALL. They seemed strained most of the time and the vocal runs at the
end are just horrid. Score: 2
“What Christmas
Means To Me” - I was
expecting Fantasia to slay me with her vocals on this track and she –
well – didn't. The music is cheery enough and she did a good job,
but not a great job. Score: 6
“I Still Have
You” - Thank you Charlie
Wilson – you have just given me my new favorite Christmas song.
This song is bouncy, funky, and very sexy. More than once I caught
myself smiling and shaking my booty – a hallmark of a good song.
Score: 10
“Christmas I'll
Be Steppin'” - Sorry R.
Kelly, I will be steppin' to the next song. I didn't like anything
about this song except for the groovy disco music. When R. started
talking, it made me think of that fictional band Sexual Chocolate.
Score: 4
“This
Christmas” - Mary J. Blige
lends this track from her holiday album, “A Very Mary Christmas”
which I have already reviewed. I loved this song then and I love it
now. Score: 9
“Shelter” -
John Legend had me from the
first note. Sploosh. But then half way through the song these
irritating back up singers came in and kind of ruined it for me. When
you have John Legend you don't need any backup singers. Score:
7
“Have Yourself
A Merry Little Christmas” - Yes
ma'am! Thank you Monica for singing this song so fabulously. This is
how this song should be sang. I will alert the drag queen corps of
this fantastic version. Score: 10
“Winter
Wonderland” - Emeli Sandé
did not do this track justice. The vibe was rather depressing. I
didn't hate the track, it just made me feel unnecessarily sad. Score:
4
“Can You Stand
The Rain” - A New Edition
classic. This track transports me back to my youth. It holds a very
special place in my heart – this song was playing while I made out
with my first girlfriend. Good times, great song. Score: 10
“I Want To Come
Home For Christmas” - What a
waste of a track. I didn't like anything about this song. Ne-Yo's
vocals are weak, the arrangement is just plain silly, and the overall
vibe of the song was boring. Score: 0
“O Holy Night”
- This is one of my favorite
holiday songs. Unfortunately, this version by Jayda Brown and Jasmine
Watkins is not. It comes off as a middle school recital performance –
and not a good one at that. Score: 3
“As” - Marsha
Ambrosius and Anthony Hamilton tackle this Stevie Wonder classic.
Surprisingly, they did a very good job on this iconic track. I loved
how they slowed down the tempo. Their grandiose vocals gave the song
an impressive amount of weight. Loved every moment of this track.
Score: 10
Average Track
Score: 6.4 Would I recommend
this to my friends? Definitely.
Just for the New Edition track alone.
