Here is what I
thought of the new Avril Lavigne album, “Avril Lavigne.” Remember
– all scores are out of a possible 10 points.
“Rock N Roll”
- This track has a Miley Cyrus kind of feel. Defiant lyrics,
pounding rock rhythms, and attitude vocals. I liked it, but then as
the track progressed I became bored. We get it you - are rock and
roll, now move on. Score: 7
“Here's To
Never Growing Up” - Um, Avril, aren't you like 29? You done
grew up girl. Another track that sounds like it came from the cutting
room floor of Miley Cyrus or Ke$ha. Score: 4
“17” - Now
we are getting into better territory. A well written song that didn't
make me roll my eyes. Do more like this. Score: 7
“Bitchin'
Summer” - Avril, if these are the best songs being offered to
you then you in danger girl. Another mindless pop tragedy that I
really never care to listen to again. Who says “bitchin'?” Score:
3
“Let Me Go” -
Fundamentally, this is a good song. I loved Avril's vocals. But
then Chad Kroeger had to show up and ruin the party. That and the
extended ending - which is pretentious as all hell - ruined this song
for me. Score: 5
“Give You What
You Like” - Yes! This! A million times this! Emotional
realness! A song about drunken sex! Best song on the album by a mile.
When you don't sing about pretentious things then I respond. Love
this song. Score: 10
“Bad Girl” -
This track had so much potential. Marilyn Manson kicks off the
song – where has he been? But then Avril's vocals come off screechy
and bit too good girl. I liked the beat and the rock rhythms, but
even with distorted vocals honey, you will never be as bad ass as
Marilyn. Score: 5
“Hello Kitty”
- This may be one of the most ridiculous songs I have ever heard.
I want to kill it with fire. Score: 0
“You Ain't Seen
Nothin' Yet” - Filler track.
This song did not piss me off, but it didn't excite me either. The
lyrics are still way too juvenile for Avril. Score: 4
“Sippin' On
Sunshine” - Another
mindless pop throwaway. The arrangement is what killed this song.
Avril's vocals aren't that bad, but the way the song was put together
is just horrendous. Score: 4
“Hello
Heartache” - Not a horrible
song per se, but nothing that makes me want to ever listen to this
again. The vocals are better on this track. Score: 5
“Falling Fast”
- A very enjoyable ballad. When
Avril keeps it real and doesn't try to pander to a certain
demographic, I respond. Well done Avril – just remember to keep it
real. Score: 10
“Hush Hush” -
Another exemplary ballad. The
middle got a smidge wonky, but once again I just love the sound of
Avril's vocals. Score: 9
Average Track
Score: 5.6 Would I recommend
this to my friends? No. There are way more bad tracks than good ones
on this album.
Escalader,
Jim
