Here is what I
thought of Jake Owen's new album, “Days Of Gold.” Remember –
all scores are out of a possible 10 points.
“Days Of Gold”
- Now THIS is how you open an
album. Fast and fun lyrics, the tempo is rocking while remaining
country to the core. I can totally see me listening to this with my
Southern gal pal down in Mississippi as we drink by the pool. Score:
10
“Beachin'” -
Meh. I don't really like when
singers talk during a song. If I want to hear a story told to me I
would go to a library. The lyrics are rather drab and the groove is
just too laid back for me. Score: 4
“1972” - Ooh
Jake! You are a saucy one! Very clever lyrics mix with a fun beat to
create a very engaging and sexy song. I love when country artists
work blue. Score: 10
“Ghost Town”
- Another well written upbeat
song. I love a well written song and these lyrics are very clever.
This cold be a monster radio hit for Jake. I can totally hear this on
WIL-FM. Score: 10
“Life Of The
Party” - This is a pretty
great song. I could relate to the lyrics, the vocals are dripping
with emotional realness, and the melody got stuck in my head. But
here's the problem – it isn't as good as the majority of the songs
on the album so far. So while it is a good song, it can get lost
among the stellar songs on the album. Score: 9
“Good Timing”
- Another middle of the road
song. The lyrics are top notch and the music is fabulous, but there
goes Jake almost
doing that talk-singing thing again. It was borderline, but it was
there. I liked this song, but I didn't love this song. That said,
this could be another radio hit for Jake. Score: 7
“Tall Glass Of
Something” - This song had me
hooked from the opening line. By far my favorite track of the album
thus far. Brilliant lyrics, kick ass music and another flawless vocal
delivery. This song got my hips swerving and made me look for my
bottle of Jagger. Score: 10
“One Little
Kiss (Never Killed Nobody)” -
A fine enough ballad. The lyrics are above average. The song just
lacked something – I can't put my finger on it, but there is an
emotional element missing. Score: 7
“What We Ain't
Got” - Attention
congregation. Please turn to page 777 in your hymn books as Jake
sings the gospel to us all. This is what I was talking about the last
song. This song is brimming with emotional realness as Jake sings
about love lost. I had to listen to this ballad three times – it is
THAT beautiful. Preach on brother Jake! Score: 10
“Tipsy” -
Na-uh Jake. I am not buying it.
After you serve such a heavenly treat on the last track, then you are
going to turn around and give me filler? Knowing how deep you can go
and then you serve up this kind of makes me mad. Don't get me wrong,
it is a fine enough song, just one that I can easily forget. Now that
I have your number, I am going to expect
excellence from you. Score: 7
“Drivin' All
Night” - Stunning. That is
what this upbeat love song is – stunning. I am obsessed with the
vocal delivery on this track. I don't think I have ever heard a
singer who entrances me so much. Lyrics are top shelf and the music
is equally fantastic. Now THIS should be a monster radio hit. Score:
10
“Sure Feels
Right” - A nice soft landing
to end the album. Nice enough song, but for real Jake can you stop
saying “tipsy.” I have heard it throughout the album and am over
it. Score: 7
Average Track
Score: 8.4. Would I recommend
this to my friends? That's a given – YES! I
am so in love with this album. It is going to be hard to pick just
three to add to my personal playlist.
